Business Growth Strategy and Scaling your Business
There is a moment in every business journey where ambition meets reality.
The early energy, the ideas, the opportunities are all there. But so too are the pressures; cash flow, people, decisions that carry real weight, and the constant question, are we doing the right things to grow, or simply staying busy?
My passion for business has never been about simply starting or running companies. It is about growing them well, sustainably, intelligently, and with purpose. That perspective has been shaped not just by success, but by the mistakes, missteps, and hard lessons learned along the way.
Because growth, real growth, does not come from theory alone. It comes from experience.
The Reality of Growth
Over the years, I have worked with businesses at every stage, from early ambition through to scale and maturity. One thing is consistent. Growth is rarely linear, and it is never accidental.
Too often, businesses fall into familiar traps. Chasing revenue without understanding margin. Taking on work that distracts from core strengths. Growing teams before the structure is ready. Saying yes too often, and no too late. Failing to put the right governance or decision making frameworks in place.
These are not signs of failure. They are signs of businesses trying to move forward without the benefit of hindsight. And that is where experience matters.
Learning the Hard Way, So You Don’t Have To
I have made many of these mistakes myself. I have seen what happens when decisions are rushed, when growth outpaces capability, or when strategy is not aligned with delivery.
Those experiences are invaluable;
They shape judgement.
They sharpen instinct.
They build the ability to ask the right questions, often the ones others avoid.
Today, my work is about bringing that experience into the room, not as theory, but as practical, grounded insight that helps businesses move forward with clarity and confidence.
Seeing Both Sides of the Table
A defining part of my perspective comes from my time working within the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership.
That experience gave me a clear understanding of how growth is supported, funded, and sometimes constrained from a public sector perspective, alongside my ongoing work in and with private businesses.
It means I understand not just what businesses need to grow, but how the wider system around them operates. This includes funding pathways, stakeholder priorities, and the realities of policy, governance, and delivery.
For the businesses I work with, this provides a genuine advantage. A clearer route to funding and opportunity, stronger alignment between commercial ambition and external support, and better navigation of both public and private sector relationships.
Growth does not happen in isolation. It sits within an ecosystem, and understanding that ecosystem can make all the difference.
Navigating Procurement, Frameworks, and Contracts
One area that often creates both opportunity and frustration for businesses is procurement.
For many, it can feel complex, time consuming, and at times inaccessible. Frameworks, bidding processes, and contract structures are not always designed with growing businesses in mind. Yet they represent significant routes to market, particularly within the public sector and larger organisations.
Through my experience, including my time at the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership, I understand how these systems operate from the inside. I know what commissioners are looking for, how decisions are made, and where businesses often fall short, not because they lack capability, but because they do not always present it effectively.
With the right approach, businesses can position themselves more effectively within procurement processes, access and make better use of frameworks, build credibility through well-structured bids, and develop contract strategies that support sustainable growth.
This is not just about winning contracts. It is about winning the right contracts, those that strengthen your business rather than stretch it too thin.
Just as importantly, it is about knowing when not to bid. Not every framework is the right fit, and not every opportunity supports your long term direction.
Procurement should not be a distraction from growth. When approached well, it becomes a powerful enabler of it.
What Really Drives Business Growth
In my experience, sustainable growth comes down to a few critical things;
Clarity of direction, understanding where you are going, and where you are not;
Discipline in decision making, recognising that not every opportunity is the right one;
Strong foundations, including financial controls, operational processes, and governance;
The right conversations, asking difficult but necessary questions at the right time;
Confidence to evolve, adapting when needed rather than holding on to what no longer works.
What This Means in Practice
For the businesses I work with, this translates into real, measurable outcomes;
Clear and actionable growth plans; Replacing reactive decision making;
Improved profitability, through stronger focus on margin and performance;
Greater confidence in leadership decisions, particularly at key points of growth;
Stronger positioning for procurement, leading to more successful bids and better contracts;
More structure and control, so growth feels intentional rather than overwhelming.
A Trusted Partner in Growth
I do not believe in one size fits all solutions. Every business is different, in its people, its market, and its ambitions.
What I bring is perspective, a combination of strategic thinking, commercial awareness, and lived experience that helps business leaders step back, see clearly, and make better decisions.
I work with businesses in a number of ways, including:
Strategic growth advisory and mentoring;
Support with procurement, frameworks, and bid positioning;
Board level guidance and decision support;
Helping leadership teams create structure, clarity, and accountability.
Sometimes this means challenging assumptions. Sometimes it means creating structure where there is none. Often, it means helping leaders realise they do not have to carry everything alone.
Why It Matters
Growth should be exciting. It should create opportunity, not just pressure.
When done well, it builds stronger businesses, more confident leadership, and long term value. When done poorly, it can dilute focus, create unnecessary risk, and limit potential.
My role is to help businesses grow with intention, avoiding the pitfalls I have seen and experienced, and building something that lasts.
Because in the end, growth is not just about getting bigger. It is about getting better.
